Following decades of deindustrialization, economic decline, income inequality, and political polarization, parts of America are a tinderbox. In Detroit, the match is lit when the local power company routinely shuts off the electricity of households behind in their monthly payments, even in the midst of an unusually brutal winter. Thousands of households resort to space and kerosene heaters, causing a spike in house fires and fire-related deaths.

Upon arriving at one of the work camps, Teddy Sanders takes in the razor wire, sentry towers, and chain-link fences: He’s back in the same hellhole that he has known for most of his adult life. His travel companion, Ein, a young man who has never experienced Teddy’s world of confinement, finds himself entering dangerous territory, where one wrong move could cost him his life. No longer the kind of man who looks the other way when someone is in trouble, Teddy vows to escape and take Ein with him to freedom.

On a small poultry farm located in Delaney, Georgia, an antigenic shift causes the H7N9 bird flu virus to jump to other species. The contagion burns through everything in its path despite the federal government’s ham-handed efforts to mask its true nature. The unprecedented mortality rate paralyzes the nation and paves the way for establishing FEMA’s martial law across the country.
