Tolstoy's first novel and acknowledged as one of his best, it is based on his own forays into the Caucasus, abandoning his aristocrat life of gambling and carousing in Moscow and volunteering to be attached to the regular army.

In 1851 Leo Tolstoy enlisted in the Russian army and was sent to the Caucasus to help defeat the Chechens. During this war a great Avar chieftain, Hadji Murád, broke with the Chechen leader Shamil and fled to the Russians for safety. Months later, while attempting to rescue his family from Shamil’s prison, Hadji Murád was pursued by those he had betrayed and, after fighting the most heroic battle of his life, was killed.

War and Peace is rightly considered to be one of the most important books ever written. Leo Tolstoy's epic novel chronicles the Napoleonic Wars from the viewpoint of five noble Russian families: Rostov, Bolkonsky, Bezukhov, Drubetskoy and Kuragin. The main story begins in 1805 with Napoleon's impending invasion of Austria, and ends with his disastrous retreat from Moscow in 1813, moving deftly between geopolitics, military strategy, family alliances, religion and philosophy as the men and women of these families try to survive and get ahead.

In Russia's struggle with Napoleon, Tolstoy saw a tragedy that involved all mankind. Greater than a historical chronicle, War and Peace is an affirmation of life itself, `a complete picture', as a contemporary reviewer put it, `of everything in which people find their happiness and greatness, their grief and humiliation'. Tolstoy gave his personal approval to this translation, published here in a new single volume edition, which includes an introduction by Henry Gifford, and Tolstoy's important essay Some Words about War and Peace.

In the winter of 1854 Tolstoy, then an officer in the Russian army, arranged to be transferred to the besieged town of Sebastopol. Wishing to see at first hand the action of what would become known as the Crimean War, he was spurred on by a fierce patriotism, but also by an equally fierce desire to alert the authorities to appalling conditions in the army. The three Sebastopol Sketches - 'December', 'May' and 'August' - re-create what happened during different phases of the siege and its effect on the ordinary men around him.

A Prisoner of the Caucasus is an 1872 novella by Leo Tolstoy about two Russian soldiers kidnapped by the enemy for ransom. They were held in custody for some time. They try to escape twice, but one of them succeeds the second time with the help of a local woman.

Questo racconto lungo fu scritto da Tolstoj con lo slancio conoscitivo ed emozionale causato dall’assedio di Sebastoli del 1853, da lui vissuto in prima persona. Il tema della guerra venne poi da lui ripreso nel suo grande romanzo Guerra e Pace ed è, come si sa, affrontato da un punto di vista morale e religioso, senza però illusioni: la guerra, in qualche modo, piace agli uomini, sia per motivi intrinseci, legati alla loro natura, sia perché stimola la loro vanità , malattia scoppiata epidemicamente, come dice l’autore, ne XIX secolo.

“Che cosa è Guerra e Pace? Non è romanzo, non poema, tanto meno cronaca storica. E’ semplicemente ciò che l’autore intese dire in quella precisa forma in cui l’ha detto.” Ecco le parle che dice Tolstoj nel poscritto alla fine dell’opera, non avendo avuto , a detta sua, “né il tempo né la capacità” di scrivere una prefazione per dichiarare lo scopo prefissosi. Lasciando quindi al lettore/ascoltatore il gradito onere di farsi da sé una sua opinione, si può dire soltanto che questo romanzo occupò cinque anni di lavoro continuo dell’autore....
