The Adventures of Ellery Queen is a radio detective program broadcast between June 1939 and May 1948. The program invited a panel of armchair detectives to solve cases during its broadcast. Adapting a technique that had been used earlier in the Author! Author! radio program, when an episode's script reached a point at which all of the clues had been revealed, the scripted portion stopped, and the panel was challenged to identify the culprit.

Lee Hunter was a Metropolitan police chief inspector who resigned from the service a couple of years ago, after falling foul of management, largely due to his out-of-control drinking. Having also lost his marriage and family, he moved from London and now lives in an English seaside town called Southport, "where no one knows my name". Hunter establishes a detective agency, but soon finds himself in debt and under threat of death if those liabilities aren’t repaid, and with no customers, things are looking very bleak indeed.
