Quo Vadis, best known for its star-studded 1951 film version, was first published in 1896 and contributed to the author’s Nobel Prize for Literature of 1905. Set in the latter years of the reign of Roman Emperor Nero, the plot concerns the love between a young Christian woman, Lygia, and a Roman patrician, Marcus Vinicius.

Scritto nel 1891 dal premio Nobel Henryk Sienkiewicz, solo cinque anni prima del suo capolavoro, "Quo vadis?", questo romanzo si snoda fra Roma e Varsavia, insieme alla vita del protagonista, aristocratico polacco, che trasmette al suo diario i conflitti e dolori di una vita sentita prima come inutile, vuota, e in seguito persa in una passione impossibile.

Mit sprachlicher Wucht wird von der Liebe im antiken Rom erzählt, zwischen dem jungen Patrizier Marcus Vinicius und der Christin Lygia, die als Geisel nach Rom kam. Die Liebenden geraten in den Strudel der Ereignisse um die Christenverfolgung. Der dekadente Nero lässt Rom anzünden, beschuldigt aber die Christen. Nun droht Lygia der Tod im Amphitheater. Doch Vicinius, inzwischen selber Christ, lässt nichts unversucht, seine Geliebte zu retten. Henryk Sienkiewicz erhielt 1905 "auf Grund seiner großartigen Verdienste als epischer Schriftsteller" den Literaturnobelpreis.
