Walter Schnaffs' Adventure, published in 1883, is a poignant tale that captures the essence of a Prussian soldier's struggle with the realities of war and his desire for peace. The story begins with Schnaffs, a stout and peaceful man, who finds himself in enemy territory during the Franco-Prussian War. His fear of battle and his longing for his family lead him to a desperate decision to surrender to the French forces. Despite his fear of being captured, Schnaffs decides to surrender to an unarmed villager, only to find himself as a prisoner in a French mansion.

Boule de Suif est une nouvelle incontournable de Guy de Maupassant, à la fois courte et percutante. L’histoire se déroule pendant la guerre franco-prussienne, alors qu’un groupe de voyageurs fuit Rouen, occupée par les Prussiens. Parmi eux, Boule de Suif, une prostituée au grand cœur, va se révéler bien plus courageuse et humaine que les bourgeois "respectables" qui l'entourent.

A stagecoach containing a microcosm of French society seek to escape to Le Havre during the Prussian war. Stopping at an inn along the way, they soon realize they have blundered into Prussian occupied territory. The travelers are not allowed to leave until one woman, a prostitute known as Boule de Suif, (literally suet dumpling, or ball of fat), sleeps with the commanding officer. This turn of events is met with universal indignation by the travelers. But as the days stretch out, everyone’s true colors are revealed.

Tre di questi sei racconti ce la descrivono come occasione di meschinità, piccole vigliaccherie, ma anche di impensati e imprevisti patriottismi; gli altri racconti, brevi lampi dolce amari, sempre ironici sono ambientati nelle campagne francesi ma anche nella sensuale e misteriosa Africa, vista con gli occhi dei colonizzatori francesi. La Gordinflona es la historia de una prostituta francesa. Guy de Maupassant utiliza la imagen de esta mujer como representación del pueblo francés, sin títulos ni dinero, engañados por la clase dirigente, derrotados. Son ellos quienes sufren las verdaderas consecuencias de la guerra. Boule de Suif (o La Gordinflona) nos presenta también la hipocresía de las clases acomodadas de la época, más interesadas en su propio beneficio que en el de Francia.

Guy de Maupassant (1850 - 1893)Henry René Albert Guy de Maupassant nació en Dieppe, Francia, el 5 de agosto de 1850. Maupassant fue admirador y amigo de Gustave Flaubert al que conoció en 1867. Flaubert lo tomó bajo su protección, le abrió la puerta de algunos periódicos y le presentó a Iván Turgénev y Émile Zola.

Rouen is occupied by the Prussian army and a group of ten residents decides to leave town. Although it is not that easy, they manage to get on a carriage. The group is quite colorful as every person represents a different part of the French population during the Franco-Prussian War of the late 19th century. A prostitute is a part of the group and although the others are filled with prejudices towards her, she is the one who could save them all when they find themselves in a Prussian-held territory.
