El narrador relata un suceso de la amistad que entabló con William Legrand (un hombre solitario), quien vivía en la isla con un ya liberado sirviente llamado Júpiter. En una de sus visitas a su amigo Legrand, el melancólico hombre le comentó que había encontrado un escarabajo que parecía de oro. Legrand dibujó el insecto en un pergamino y lo entregó a su amigo para que lo observara, pero su allegado solo atinó a decir que el dibujo parecía una calavera. It is a fictionalised account of the first expedition across the Western Wilderness, crossing the Rocky Mountains. The journal chronicled a 1792 expedition led by Julius Rodman up the Missouri River to the Northwest. This 1792 expedition would have made Rodman the first European to cross the Rocky Mountains. The detailed journal chronicles events of the most surprising nature and recounts '[T]he unparalleled vicissitudes and adventures experienced by a handful of men in a country which, until then, had never been explored by "civilised man"'.

During his twilight years, the French author Jules Verne (1828-1905) wrote two original sequels to books that had fired his own youthful imagination but which he felt to be incomplete: Johann Wyss's Swiss Family Robinson and Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Arthur Gordon Pym (1845) was only one of many Poe stories which Verne admired; no other single author had more impact on his writing.
