“MS. Found in a Bottle” by Edgar Allan Poe is a haunting tale of maritime terror, mystery, and the unknown. First published in 1833, this classic short story follows a doomed narrator who survives a violent storm only to find himself aboard a ghostly ship crewed by silent, ancient sailors. As the vessel drifts deeper into a strange and otherworldly sea, the narrator records his final observations in a manuscript cast into the ocean.

This recording is of the 11 essays and stories contained in Volume Five and includes two examples of Poe’s activity as a literary critic. Poe’s dry wit is laced through many of these tales and will bring a wry smile to your lips even as you shiver at the consequences of “betting the devil your head”.

Being an English author in a new and different culture seems to work its magic when these two are placed together in the same spot with a rich vocabulary; ideas seem more fully formed and characters have another edge to their existence. For the outsider looking in, more can be revealed and shared with ourselves.
