Story1
Ken Rex McElroy terrorized the residents of several counties in northwestern Missouri. He raped young girls and brutalized them after they went to live with him or even married him; he shot at least two men; he stole cattle and hogs, and burned down the houses of some who interfered with his criminal activities. Thanks to the expert efforts of his lawyer and the pro-defendant bias of state laws, he served no more than a few days in jail, the author shows.

Story0
When Valerie Maidment was a baby, doctors diagnosed her with hydrocephalus, a condition that causes excess fluid to build in the brain. After the second surgery at age 9, she was declared healthy; she lived a happy, normal life, graduating from high school and college, having children, and buying and managing her own convenience store. Until one day, when everything changed. Fluid began to build once again in Valerie’s brain, causing immense pressure that—due to misdiagnosis on the part of multiple doctors—caused her optic nerves to break down.

Story0
Daylight Come is an experimental audio project that traces my family’s history in the context of Jamaican migration to Britain, colonisation and enslavement. The project weaves personal anecdotes, historical context, and cultural reflections, for an auditory experience that brings to life the challenges faced by my ancestors. AI-generated voices proved instrumental in developing this particular project. © 2024 Calvin Walker

Story0
MacLean had doors slammed in his face, guns pulled on him, and was bitten by a dog. Eventually, he won over the closed community of Skidmore, Missouri. The inhabitants shared with him the reign of terror Ken Rex McElroy inflicted for 20 years in Northwest Missouri and information about his murder on the main street of Skidmore in 1981. Despite 45 witnesses, the case remains unsolved. MacLean tells the story in his book In Broad Daylight, first published in 1988. The Story Behind '"In Broad Daylight" brings the book up to date.

Story0
Dawn Downey’s second collection of essays is for everyone who savors down-to-earth stories with a twist of wisdom. Deeply honest and deeply personal, her observations are laced with quirky insights and self-deprecating humor. She draws inspiration from the flu, the garden, bad knees, and bad TV. She explores larger themes of loss and estrangement while retaining a youthful outlook on the vagaries of life and aging. Listeners will journey from the mundane to the metaphysical. Here’s an author who lets us in on her fear of cows. We follow her quest to learn compassion.
