Arthur Conan Doyle was the greatest genre writer Britain has ever produced. Joseph Habakuk Jephson, a soldier who was hurt in the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, is in convalescence. One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.

For reasons that are unclear, Nicholas Craigie, Captain of the Pole-Star, decides to anchor in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, contrary to the opinion of his crew. Indeed, the boat could be trapped in the ice at any moment, resulting in a sudden death for everyone. One morning Mr. Manson, the second mate, reports he saw a ghost at night. His story is not taken seriously, and is put down to idleness.
