Anatole France (1844-1924) was a French poet, journalist, and novelist who wrote several best sellers. The Revolt of the Angels is a mischievous take on the theology of modern society; it chronicles the thoughts of Arcade, a lowly guardian angel, as he discovers the ugly truths of his divine master in the library of his human charge As Maurice, the young man abandoned by Arcade, struggles to get his guardian back, one gets a view of a wide variety of the author’s artistic personalities, most of whom are fallen angels.

A humorous critique of customs and laws, rituals and rites, its subject is human nature, but its characters are penguins in the mythical land of Penguinia. The story of the strutting penguins and their virtues and vices is not merely a burlesque allegory of French history, but a satire of the history of mankind.

In questo quarto volume della tetralogia della Storia contemporanea, il signor Bergeret, promosso docente alla Sorbona, si trasferisce a Parigi con la sorella e la figlia Paolina. Con la sorella esplora il proprio passato, incontrato casualmente nella sua vecchia casa d’infanzia, sfitta e rovinata; con la figlia acquista una brillante ascoltatrice dei suoi discorsi filosofici, divenuti, finalmente, ottimisti.

In questo terzo libro della Storia contemporanea, il signor Bergeret si riconcilia finalmente con la vita. Diventato professore titolare, acquisita la dolce compagnia di un cane, continua, fra riflessioni filosofiche e prese di posizioni politiche del tutto scomode riguardanti l’affare Dreyfus, ad accompagnarci nel viaggio di questa Francia in cui governi radicali e conservatori si alternano, e in cui l’antisemitismo viene considerato patriottico.

Anatole France (1844 – 1924), è stato uno scrittore francese, Premio Nobel per la letteratura nell'anno 1921. Nel 1896 iniziò a scrivere la Tetralogia della storia contemporanea, composto di quattro romanzi, di cui questo è il primo. I romanzi hanno per protagonista il signor Bergeret, modesto e disilluso, ma colto e arguto professore di un liceo di provincia, attraverso i cui occhi France descrive la società del suo tempo.
