"Marius" est le troisième tome des "Misérables". Ici se dessinent la misère de Paris, décrite avec tendresse à travers la figure de Gavroche, et le souffle de la révolution qui anime les jeunes gens de la capitale. Marius, petit-fils de royaliste et fils de Bonapartiste, c'est Victor Hugo lui-même lorsqu'il avait dix-sept ans.

"Fantine", le premier des cinq tomes qui composent "Les Misérables", raconte l'ascension d'un ancien bagnard, Jean Valjean, et la chute d'une fille-mère, Fantine, qui finit par se tuer pour nourir son enfant, Cosette.

After his release, Valjean plans to rob monseigneur Myriel, a saint-like bishop, but cancels his plan. However, he forfeits his parole by committing a minor crime, and for this crime Valjean is haunted by the police inspector Javert. Valjean eventually reforms and becomes a successful businessman, benefactor, and mayor of a northern town.
