Everybody knows there's no such thing as a female wizard. So when the wizard Drum Billet accidentally passes on his staff of power to an eighth daughter of an eighth son, a girl called Eskarina (Esk, for short), the misogynistic world of wizardry wants nothing to do with her.

They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance. There are some situations where the correct response is to display the sort of ignorance that happily and wilfully flies in the face of the facts. In this case, the birth of a baby girl, born a wizard, by mistake. Everybody knows that there's no such thing as a female wizard. But now it's gone and happened, there's nothing much anyone can do about it. Let the battle of the sexes begin.

Un mago moribundo cede su bastón - y por tanto su poder - a Eskarina, un recién nacido que, según los rituales admitidos, no puede ser mago sino bruja. Con el tiempo, el rito de iniciación se completa con un aprendizaje más formal en la Universidad Invisible, inefable centro de estudios esotéricos, donde el mago Simón hace gala de sus increíbles poderes. Juntos, Eskarina y Simón tendrán que hacer frente a una invasión de extrañas criaturas que amenazan con destruir el Mundodisco....
