The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the first great American novels. The book is noted for its innocent young protagonist, its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River, and its sober and often scathing look at the entrenched attitudes, particularly racism, of the time. The journey of Huck and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, down the Mississippi River on their raft may be one of the most enduring images of escape and freedom in all of American literature.

Questo romanzo fu publicato nel 1884, seguendo le avvenure di Tom Sawyer. Infatti Huck Finn, amico di Tom, diviene qui protagonista, narrando della sua vita in prima persona. Secondo Hemingway “Tutta la letteratura americana discende da un libro di Mark Twain intitolato Huckleberry Finn”. Secondo alcuni critici il personaggio di Tom Sawyer è il ragazzo che Twain era stato e Huck il ragazzo al quale avrebbe voluto assomigliare: ed effettivamente i due ragazzi i nteragiscono come in un gioco di parti interne ad una stessa persona.

In the sequel to Tom Sawyer, his sidekick Huckleberry Finn takes centre stage. Innocent and well-intentioned, Huck is brought face to face with the reality of slavery in the southern states as he helps his friend Jim escape to freedom.

Pour échapper à un père toujours plus violent, Huckleberry Finn décide de disparaître. Se faisant passer pour mort, le jeune garçon croise la route du vieux Jim, un esclave évadé. Ensemble, les fugitifs vont descendre le Mississipi en radeau, affronter les bandits et un duo de redoutables escrocs. Mais un danger plus grand les menace : une prime est offerte pour la capture de Jim.
