Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. The radio dramatisation of The Hobbit became a classic when it was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1968 and it continues to delight today. Tolkien's famous saga, the prelude to the Lord of the Rings, has all the ingredients of fantasy and adventure: dwarves, elves, goblins and trolls, a fearsome dragon, a great wizard, a perilous quest, and a dramatic climax.

Along the way, Bilbo discovers courage and resourcefulness he never knew he possessed, facing challenges that test his wit and resolve.

Tolkien, en 1937, cette histoire, inventée par l'auteur pour ses propres enfants, raconte les aventures de Bilbo, un jeune hobbit, héros malgré lui en quête d'un trésor gardé par un dragon, en compagnie de nains et du magicien Gandalf. Devenu un classique de la littérature de jeunesse, ce texte a également enchanté des générations de tous âges.

Bilbo Beutlin, der kleine Hobbit, macht sich auf den Weg zum Einsamen Berg, um den rechtmäßigen Schatz der Zwerge zurückzuholen, den der Drache Smaug gestohlen hat. Als er auf seiner Reise einen Ring findet und ihn arglos einsteckt, ahnt er nicht, was für eine Rolle der Ring einmal spielen wird.

"Der Hobbit", erschienen 1937, ist Tolkiens erstes nichtwissenschaftliches Werk und gilt als Vorläufer der großen Trilogie "Der Herr der Ringe".
Wir lernen mit Bilbo Beutlin einen typischen Vertreter der Hobbits kennen, die laut Tolkien kleiner als die bösartigen Zwerge sind, dazu neigen, ein bisschen fett in der Magengegend zu werden, und außerdem (besonders nach den Mahlzeiten) tief und saftig lachen können. Dass ausgerechnet ein Anti-Held wie Bilbo - wenngleich nicht ganz freiwillig - zum Abenteurer wird, macht ihn uns erst recht sympathisch...

A Hobbit, mint Tolkien sok más írása, gyermekeinek szóló történetként indult. Először 1937-ben jelent meg és ma méltán világhírű gyermekmese. De több is ennél. Mindenkihez szól, akiben még ott él a gyermek. A világ, ahol játszódik, korai változata Középföldének. De már megtalálhatók benne Tolkien világának legfontosabb alkotóelemei; tündék, törpök, hobbitok, Gandalf a mágus, és felbukkan a Gyűrű is. Magában is elbűvölő, fantasztikus mese, mely egyben A Gyűrűk Urának előzménye.
