The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. The cause of Gregor's transformation is never revealed, and Kafka himself never gave an explanation. The rest of Kafka's novella deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being burdensome to his parents and sister, who are repulsed by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become.

Battling with his new structure, he attempts to adjust to his condition while wrestling with the deficiency of his work and the rising estrangement from his loved ones. At first, his family is appalled however keeps on accommodating him out of obligation. Over the long run, notwithstanding, their consideration transforms into hatred as Gregor turns into a weight. His sister, who once showed empathy, ultimately joins the others in wanting for his demise. Gregor's disengagement develops, and he surrenders...
