Das Schicksal von Robinson Crusoe ist ein Mythos. Weniger bekannt ist das Original, auf dem dieses Hörspiel beruht: Robinsons Flucht von zu Hause, seine Abenteuer bis zu dem verhängnisvollen Schiffbruch und schließlich die 28 Jahre auf der - scheinbar - einsamen Insel.

Der Kaufmann und Seefahrer Robinson Crusoe wird nach einem Schiffbruch als einziger Überlebender auf eine unbewohnte Insel verschlagen. Er schildert, wie er sein Leben auf der Insel meistert - vom Errichten seiner Hütte bis zu seinem Zusammentreffen mit einem Eingeborenen, den er Freitag nennt und zu seinem Diener erzieht. Doch wird er die Insel wieder verlassen können?

Der Engländer Robinson Crusoe fährt gegen den Widerstand seines Vaters zur See. Er wird von Piraten gefangen und versklavt. Ihm gelingt die Flucht und er wird von einem Schiff aufgenommen, dass nach Brasilien fährt. Dort kauft er eine Zuckerplantage und bewirtschaftet diese. Um Sklaven zu holen fährt er wieder zur See. Sein Schiff zerschellt jedoch an einer Klippe und er strandet auf einer einsamen Insel. Das Notwendigste kann er aus dem Wrack bergen und richtet sich auf der Insel häuslich ein...

After scavenging his broken ship for useful items, he had only his skills and ingenuity to keep him alive. For twenty-four years there was to be no one else on the island. In the middle of that twenty-fourth year he rescued a native about to be eaten by cannibals who were using his island for a place of feasting. Crusoe named this man Friday, after the day of his rescue. Friday became his faithful servant and friend, even after they were able to leave the island.

Running away to sea brings adventure and wealth, but then come shipwreck and a desperate struggle for survival. Defying his parents, Robinson Crusoe goes to sea. He is captured by pirates but escapes to Brazil. He makes a fortune using slave labour to grow tobacco and sugar. He sails to Africa to bring back more slaves but is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. Everyone else is drowned. For more than twenty years, he lives alone. He learns to hunt and fish and make shelter.
