Daniel Defoe's The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner is considered by many the first English novel. Based on the real-life experiences of the castaway Alexander Selkirk, the book has had a perennial appeal among people of all ages - especially young adults - who continue to find inspiration in the inventive resourcefulness of its hero, the sole survivor of a shipwreck who is marooned on an uninhabited island.

Crusoe, a dog, and two cats survive shipwreck and find themselves on a small island. He adapts to his new surroundings with creativity and perseverance. Several years pass and he manages to befriend a prisoner from the island. Crusoe eventually makes it off of the island though his family believes him already dead. Daniel Defoe, ritenuto uno dei padri del romanzo inglese, ebbe una vita avventurosa quasi quanto quella del protagonista del suo romanzo più famoso. En 1651, Robinson Crusoé quitte York, en Angleterre pour naviguer, contre la volonté de ses parents qui voulaient qu'il devienne avocat. Le navire est arraisonné par des pirates de Salé et Crusoé devient l'esclave d'un Maure. Il parvient à s'échapper sur un bateau et ne doit son salut qu'à un navire portugais qui passe au large de la côte ouest de l'Afrique. Arrivé au Brésil, Crusoé devient le propriétaire d'une plantation.
