"Jane Eyre" est un roman sur fond autobiographique écrit en 1847 par Charlotte Brontë, sœur d'Émily Brontë, l'auteur des "Hauts de Hurlevent". Jane, orpheline recueillie par sa tante Mme Reed, est maltraitée puis envoyée à l'internat. À dix-huit ans, elle devient la préceptrice d'Adèle, pupille de M. Rochester. Commence alors une histoire d'amour impossible entre cet homme de quarante ans hanté par un lourd secret et Jane, qui finit par apprendre la vérité, et s'enfuit.

Charlotte Brontë's classic novel, Jane Eyre, brings to life the ups and downs encountered by the book's namesake, the young Jane Eyre. Orphaned at an early age, Jane is raised by her aunt, Mrs. Reed, who treats her poorly. Fortunately for Jane, she is sent away to the Lowood School, but she soon encounters more maltreatment at the hands of the headmaster. She later moves to the manor known as Thornfield, where she accepts a nanny position, and it is there that she encounters the famed Mr. Rochester, with whom she falls in love.

Attraction, desire and sex were not proper subjects for a 19th-century novel, and Charlotte Brontë's clear and open handling of all three in Jane Eyre was shocking, exciting and revolutionary. Jane Eyre - a small, plain-faced, intelligent and honest English orphan - is abused by her aunt and cousins as a child; acquires role models during her education at Lowood Academy; and becomes the governess of Thornfield Manor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester.

When Jane Eyre was published under the pseudonym of Currer Bell in 1847, it received immediate recognition. Thackeray, for one, described it as "the masterpiece of a great genius". And indeed, since that time, Jane Eyre has become one of the classics of English literature. This abridgement of Charlotte Bronte's famous novel traces the story of Jane Eyre from her unhappy childhood as an orphan to her adult life and her eventual happiness.
