"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" is the series of short stories that made the fortunes of the Strand magazine, in which they were first published, and won immense popularity for Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. The detective is at the height of his powers and the volume is full of famous cases, including The Red-Headed League, The Blue Carbuncle, and The Speckled Band. Although Holmes gained a reputation for infallibility, Conan Doyle showed his own realism and feminism by having the great detective defeated by Irene Adler - the woman - in the very first story, A Scandal in Bohemia.

Una mañana de invierno Holmes recibió una carta del inspector Stanley Hopkins desde la granja Abbey, en Marsham, Kent, que le pedía urgentemente que fuera a ayudarle para poder desentrañar el misterioso asesinato de Sir Eustace Brackenstall. Cuando llegan a la granja Abbey se encuentran con Lady Brackenstall, una mujer de una extraordinaria belleza e ideas avanzadas para su época.

El inspector Stanley Hopkins, siente admiración por Sherlock Holmes y le va a pedir que le ayude a descubrir el autor del violento asesinato del capitán Peter Carey, que es conocido como “el negro”. El capitán Carey era un antiguo cazador de focas, a bordo de su barco el Unicornio del mar, que vivía retirado con su esposa y su hija cerca de Forest Row. Era muy violento y siempre estaba borracho. Un día, apareció clavado en la pared de su cabaña con su propio arpón de pesca.

Un miembro de la familia real británica necesita urgentemente una cantidad muy elevada de dinero y la solicita prestada a uno de los banqueros de mejor reputación en los círculos financieros de Londres, presentándose en su casa a última hora de la tarde. Para tranquilizar al banquero cuya obligación es la de garantizar el préstamo, el aristócrata le entrega una corona de esmeraldas o berilos de un valor incalculable para la casa real, pidiéndole encarecidamente que la guarde inmediatamente en su caja fuerte para que no corra ningún riesgo ya que es una de las joyas de la corona británica.

Sherlock enseguida reconoce a un visitante inesperado: Percy Trevelyan un gran especialista en enfermedades nerviosas experto en catalepsia, que también fue compañero suyo de estudios. Cuando empezó, Trevelyan no tenía dinero para poder abrir una consulta en la exclusiva zona donde estaban los mejores especialistas, pero un mecenas llamado Blessington le propuso dejarle el dinero a cambio del 75% de sus beneficios.

La señora Susan Cushing recibe el correo un paquete que contiene ni más ni menos que dos orejas humanas cortadas que han sido metidas en sal. El inspector Lestrade sospecha que es una broma de unos estudiantes de medicina, pero Holmes sin embargo estas seguro tras examinar el paquete que se trata de la prueba de un crimen importante y como siempre los argumentos de sus explicaciones hacen a todos reconocer su razón.

Los Musgrave eran una de las familias más antiguas de Inglaterra. Uno de sus descendientes creó y instauró un ritual de la familia por el cual todos los primogénitos tenían que hacer un juramento muy especial al llegar a la mayoría de edad. Sir Reginald Musgrave va a contratar a Sherlock Holmes para que averigüe que es lo que ha sucedido con dos de sus empleados domésticos más queridos: Raquel, una de las doncellas y Richard, el mayordomo de la casa toda la vida, que han desaparecido.
