El inspector Stanley Hopkins, siente admiración por Sherlock Holmes y le va a pedir que le ayude a descubrir el autor del violento asesinato del capitán Peter Carey, que es conocido como “el negro”. El capitán Carey era un antiguo cazador de focas, a bordo de su barco el Unicornio del mar, que vivía retirado con su esposa y su hija cerca de Forest Row. Era muy violento y siempre estaba borracho. Un día, apareció clavado en la pared de su cabaña con su propio arpón de pesca.

Un miembro de la familia real británica necesita urgentemente una cantidad muy elevada de dinero y la solicita prestada a uno de los banqueros de mejor reputación en los círculos financieros de Londres, presentándose en su casa a última hora de la tarde. Para tranquilizar al banquero cuya obligación es la de garantizar el préstamo, el aristócrata le entrega una corona de esmeraldas o berilos de un valor incalculable para la casa real, pidiéndole encarecidamente que la guarde inmediatamente en su caja fuerte para que no corra ningún riesgo ya que es una de las joyas de la corona británica.
