1999年的电影The Matrix中大量借用了弥赛亚、复活、拯救等犹太-基督教的意象，同时又混合了诺斯底主义、佛教、禅宗等思想，构建出一种看似深刻却模糊的体系。电影中最核心的一句话“free your mind”，表面上是在呼吁思想解放，但由于缺乏真实的标准与根基，最终变成一种自我暗示甚至自我欺骗。相对而言，罗马书中所说的“不要效法这个世界，要心意更新而变化”，指向的不是逃离现实，也不是自己根据私欲重新定义现实，而是在真实世界和真实的自我反省中不断校准。影片提出红药丸与蓝药丸的选择，后来被现实政治中左右阵营抢着使用，双方都声称自己掌握“真相”。但如果世界在当下被诠释为虚假的，人更容易把责任推给系统，推给看不见的敌人，而忽视镜中就可以看到的自己的选择与责任。
