Als Adolf Hitler 1933 in Deutschland an die Macht kam, waren vor allem der demokratische Westen und die Sowjetunion Zufluchtsort für die hunderttausenden Verfolgten des NS-Regimes. Doch wenig bekannt ist, dass auch die Länder Südeuropas viele Flüchtlinge aufgenommen haben. Allein im damaligen Jugoslawien haben mehr als 55.000 Menschen Schutz vor den Nationalsozialisten gefunden. Die deutsche Historikerin und Autorin Marie-Janine Calic erzählt in ihrem Buch „Balkan-Odyssee: Auf der Flucht vor Hitler durch Südosteuropa“ Geschichten von berührenden Schicksalen.
