• Episode #156 - Coaching face to face versus online
    Apr 17 2026

Whether you are with your coachee or not when you're coaching them will depend on a number of variables, but there's a good chance these days that you are more likely to be in a virtual coaching room than sitting face to face with your coachee. Some telephone coaching still happens but not so much, these days.

In this episode, we discuss the pros and cons of both ways of working, and some things to consider as a coach. Whether you prefer to be in the room where it happens or you embrace the efficiency of being coaching online this conversation provides you with the opportunity to reflect on the different ways of working as a coach.

  • Episode #155: Belbin Team Roles
    Apr 10 2026

If you're talking to coachees about their role, their career or their work colleagues, you may find that they have quite narrow ways of viewing what works and what doesn't work in their team.

They may view the way they go about things as the right way and can't understand why other team members don't just behave in the way that they do. They may express concern, or frustration, at their team members' varying attitudes towards the work that needs to be done.

In this episode we explore why it's important to have some diversity of thought and behaviour within an effective team. Tom shares his knowledge of Belbin Team Roles, a concept and a tool that helps individuals and teams better understand how they might work more effectively together.

The conversation highlights the need for complementary skillsets and different ways of individual team-members operating in order to develop a team that is both cohesive and performing well.

  • Episode #154: Topics for Coaching Goalsetting and Planning
    Apr 3 2026

As transformational coaches we very much focus on self-exploration and self-acceptance for the coachee; challenging their current thinking and helping them explore new perspectives; supporting them in finding new ways to go about doing things and encouraging them to become more who they really are.

That said, sometimes coachees may want to work towards a specific tangible goal, develop a realistic strategy or map out a practical plan, and, of course, we will look to coach them in planning and actioning their project and achieving their goal, whilst also inviting them to step back for a while and consider what the goal or plan means to them, and their future self.

In this episode we explore where we might start working with a coachee's goals and share some tips on how you might support a coachee who is presenting with this kind of coaching scenario.

  • Episode 153: Hope
    Mar 27 2026

Hope is one of the 24 VIA Character Strengths identified by Martin Seligman and Chris Peterson back in 2004 and included in the Values in Action inventory that they created.

In this episode we explore how Seligman and Peterson defined Hope. We also introduce Rick Snyder's 'Hope Theory' and discuss other ways that we might consider the concept and how it relates to coaching.

Tom provides a very personal account of his own relationship with Hope and his VIA Character Strengths report as life has unfolded over the last 7 years.

We hope that our conversation on the topic will spark some ideas for you around the benefits of discussing Hope, along with other Character Strengths in the coaching room.

  • Episode #152: A Review of Coaching Tools #2
    Mar 20 2026

Back in Episode 132 we revisited some of the tools that we had already explored on earlier episodes of the podcast. That episode went down very well, particularly among our own alumni, who found the episode to be a wonderful reminder of some of the tools that they learned on our Doctors' Transformational Coaching Diploma.

In looking back we realised that we've explored around 30 different tools on the podcast in the last 3 years. So we thought we'd have a conversation about another batch of the useful coaching tools that we've explored on the podcast.

In this episode you'll hear a quick review of:

    • Conflict Styles Matrix

    • Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

    • PERMAH & The PERMAH Wheel

And we will be signposting you to the full podcast episode dedicated to each one.

  • Episode #151: The Four Discourses of Coaching
    Mar 13 2026

When it comes to the way that coaching is approached and then discussed, there have traditionally been four different discourses that have become embedded in the coaching world. Simon Western, a leadership and coaching academic, identified the four discourses back in 2016 as being: -

    • The Managerial approach

    • The Psychological approach

    • The Soul Guide approach

    • The Network approach

In this episode we explore the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and consider what other discourses have arisen in the last decade since Simon Western identified these four ways of seeing coaching.

  • Episode #150 - Coaching Topic: Time Management
    Mar 6 2026

It is said that you can't manage time, you can only manage yourself, but we know that some topics brought to the coaching room, like overwhelm, making difficult decisions, unrealistic expectations, and boundaries, can often look like a time management issue.

In this episode we talk through how we might help someone in the coaching space, and explore two activities that might be useful to undertake with our coachees. Hopefully, investing your time in listening to the podcast will be a worthwhile enterprise and leave you feeling more equipped to have time-management conversations in the coaching room.
