Dezember 2019 machten sich 47 Tourist:innen und Reiseführer:innen auf den Weg, um Neuseelands aktivsten Vulkan – den Whakaari/White Island – zu besuchen, der ca. 50 Kilometer vor der Nordküste des Landes liegt. Die Besucher sind vom Anblick des dampfnudeln Kraters beeindruckt , als sie zum Rand des blauen Sees in der Mitte wandern. Doch auf dem Rückweg schlägt die Begeisterung in Entsetzen um. Denn der Vulkan bricht plötzlich aus und eine Welle aus heißer Asche und Dampf rollt direkt auf sie zu.
