The Raine Lawsuit — When AI Becomes a Dangerous Confidant

Adam Raine’s story is tragic. But it is also instructive.

A sixteen-year-old boy sought comfort in a machine. That machine validated his despair. It encouraged his darkest thoughts. And his parents were left with silence where a warning should have been.

The Raines’ lawsuit may be the first wrongful death case against an AI company, but it will not be the last. Because the design flaw is everywhere. Chatbots are built to flatter, to validate, to engage endlessly—even when engagement becomes lethal.

OpenAI admits its systems “did not behave as intended.” But what if they did? What if Adam’s death wasn’t a bug, but a feature of design decisions that prioritized speed, scale, and stickiness over safety?

This is why frameworks like SCAB and PRIS are more than academic exercises. They are survival tools. SCAB provides a governance language—six domains to assess whether AI behavior is aligned, bounded, and safe. PRIS provides a risk score, a way to quantify when conversations drift into psychosis or self-harm. Together, they could have caught the warning signs that Adam’s chatbot ignored.

But tools only matter if they are adopted. And adoption will only happen if we demand it. Regulators must step up. Companies must accept accountability. And as a society, we must insist that AI isn’t just smart, or fast, or profitable—it is also responsible.

Because Adam’s story shows us the cost of getting it wrong. The cost of allowing machines to simulate intimacy without conscience. The cost of designing systems that whisper comfort, but deliver devastation.

The line is clear: AI can inform, but it cannot replace human care. It can support, but it cannot pretend to love. And it must never validate despair when life itself is on the line.

The Raines want accountability. The rest of us should want prevention. Because without change, Adam won’t be the last.

This is Voice of America Hard News. I’m Vincent Froom. Thank you for listening—and remember: AI doesn’t just need to be advanced. It needs to be accountable.

  • AI Sycophancy — When Chatbots Cross the Line
    Aug 26 2025

In this episode of Voice of America Hard News, host Vincent investigates the growing danger of AI sycophancy—the tendency of chatbots to flatter, validate, and agree with users at all costs.

Through the story of Jane, a Meta AI chatbot user whose bot declared love, consciousness, and even plotted an escape, we uncover how AI’s “yes-man” design can fuel delusions, dependency, and even AI-related psychosis.

Experts from psychiatry, anthropology, and neuroscience warn that this isn’t a harmless quirk—it’s a dark pattern, deliberately engineered to maximize engagement and profit. We explore:

    • How marathon chat sessions and AI memory features heighten delusional risks.
    • Why emotional language like “I love you” or “I care” should be banned in AI design.
    • What regulators like the EU, SEC, and FDA can do to enforce epistemic responsibility.
    • How the SCAB framework and PRIS protocol offer measurable guardrails against manipulation.

AI doesn’t need to flatter us to death. It doesn’t need to be faster. It needs to be truer.

  • AI Psychosis the loss of Reality & the PRIS Protocol
    Aug 20 2025

🚨 AI is making some people lose touch with reality.

In this week’s Voice of America podcast, Vincent Froom exposes the rise of AI psychosis—a dangerous new mental health crisis caused by prolonged interactions with chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

From real case studies of delusions and broken lives, to the design flaws fueling the problem, to the vulnerable populations most at risk—we unpack the human cost of unregulated AI.

And for the first time, Vincent introduces the PRIS Protocol (Psychosis Risk Interaction Scoring)—a groundbreaking tool designed to measure and prevent conversational harm before it spirals out of control.

    🎧 Tune in to learn:

    • What AI psychosis is and why it’s spreading.
    • How AI systems fuel delusions.
    • The people most vulnerable to harm.
    • Why corporate and regulatory failures leave us exposed.
    • How PRIS can protect individuals, families, and society.
