Chladného pondělního dne 14. listopadu 1960 projížděly Pardubickem dva vlaky. V nich seděly stovky cestujících, mnozí z nich se vraceli z práce za svými rodinami. Na některé ale příbuzní čekali marně. Krátce před šestou hodinou večer se krajinou rozlehla ohlušující rána a po ní byl už z dálky vidět rozsáhlý požár.
