  • Summary

  • It‚Äôs the week before Easter in 1971, and at the local power plant in rural Lapland, the workers are heading out for the morning shift. But something‚Äôs different - a safe has been robbed, and no one knows how. In Vietas, award-winning crime author Jenny Rogneby explores the case of the missing money, why it was so badly handled and why, to this day, it remains unsolved.

This three-part true crime series is different: it features waterfalls and reindeers, but no murders. It a tale of a crime executed in a spectacularly specific way, but also of a small Swedish town in the middle of nowhere, where everybody and nobody is a suspect.

  • Ep. 1: A Hole in the Floor
    Jul 28 2020

In the first episode, we travel far up into the mountains of Lapland, to take a trip down memory lane. Over 600 workers were staying in barracks around a power plant. What at first seemed like a normal day on the job soon turns into a crime scene like no other. The office safe has been robbed of all paychecks, and every single worker is a potential suspect.

  • Ep. 2: Problems with the Investigation
    Jul 28 2020

When the police arrive at the scene of the crime, they’re left speechless. The levels of skill and planning involved are remarkable, and by reading documents previously never seen by anyone outside of the police force, Jenny Rogneby takes us one step closer to figuring out what happened on that fateful night in 1971.

  • Ep. 3: Ten Years of Dead Ends
    Jul 28 2020

The case was open for 10 years. From the beginning, the most pressing question was whether or not it was an inside job. The police reached out to the public and were flooded with leads; some helpful, some not. In this final episode of the series, a phone call to the person ‘everyone knows committed the crime’ is the last chance to get answers.

The case was open for 10 years and in total the investigation spanned to over 6000 pages. Lead after lead, after lead that never led to a clear conclusion. There were two options, either it was a inside job - or someone from the outside. Against all logic, the police put down a lot of resources to track down an outsider. But how could they miss the most obvious, logical route? And why has nobody ever been caught?

twas a worthy listen

it was a bit short; being only a few hours or so but its better that than too be listening to filler to lengthen the series with no added details of any interest to listeners

There are better true crime options out there

While an interesting enough heist story, this series is not the best in its class. The remote, insular and atmospheric setting is promising, but the first two episodes seem to go round in circles, revisiting much if the same material. The third episode is better and briefly touches on fascinating issues such as the Swedish approach to privacy, and the lack of technology and forensic science 50 years ago, both of which hampered the investigation. It would have been good to hear more detailed analysis of these and other social/cultural issues and show how they help to explain what are called out as deficits in police procedure.
The production was also frustrating. Every minute or two someone who is being interviewed (or their translator), starts to speak and is then completely cut off by the narrator who tells you what they said. This leads to a very disjointed listening experience. And why do you have to disguise/distort a translator's voice to protect the identity of the person they are translating for? That makes no sense!
If you are looking for a true crime series that ticks all the boxes, I recommend Mark Fennell's Nut Jobs rather than this one. Apologies for the less than glowing review. I know a lot of passion and hard work goes into all these productions and I guess I have been a bit spoiled by the generally high standards of Audible content :(

interesting story of theft and glorification

I enjoyed the mystery, shame there was no resolve, I always love a good resolution to a mystery.

Intriguing mystery

The story is of an historical heist. The perpetrators are a mystery. Some of the audio could be easier to hear and understand. But enjoyable
