Vanessa Stoykov - Because finance is boring but money is sexy

  • Summary

  • In her ongoing quest to bring people to their own financial flashpoints through entertaining storytelling, Vanessa has designed her podcast to be a unique series of stories that span scripted narrative and fictional characters. The debut, a five part scripted narrative called The Breakfast Club, introduces us to six very different people, who used to be the popular group in the high school they graduated from 25 years ago. Now their financial and life circumstances look completely different. There’s a glam business owner, a mum of three, a divorced part time lawyer, an accountant, a car salesman and a billionaire tech guy. Their past is the only thing they have in common. But once the tequila is passed around and the group start to relax, the real truth comes out about who each of them have really become. Through looking at the characters life and choices, we can start to see these people are not very different from most of us. And while some had a lot more money than others, most are unhappy because of choices they made earlier in life, without knowing the consequences for their future. Vanessa is our narrator and guide, to expose what’s really going on with these six characters, who are likable and relatable. She also brings in expert guests, to pull back the curtains on what money is influencing behind closed doors, and identifies the five powerful pillars of financial change. If you love a good podcast weaved with entertainment and insight for your own life, then The Breakfast Club is for you. It is the companion podcast to Vanessa’s financial fable, The Breakfast Club for 40 Somethings.

‘It’s about giving yourself permission to change.’

‘People can become so focused and the breadth of what they're trying to achieve can become more and more narrow.’

  • Don't let DESIRE determine how financially comfortable you are, with Jenny Josling
    Sep 11 2022

In this fourth episode, financial educator and author Vanessa Stoykov details the way DESIRE contributes to how financially comfortable we are - both now and later in life.

Vanessa is joined by Jenny Josling to dive deep into the lessons learned from fictional characters pulled from Vanessa’s finance novel ‘The Breakfast Club for 40-somethings.’

What you will learn in this episode:

    • How desire is a treadmill, not a cul de sac.  We can get caught up in the chase without realising we’re picking up the pace.
    • When high-net-worth individuals like Josie get trapped by desire - needing to go to upmarket hotels and travel business class because they think that’s what’s expected of them.
    • Running your own business can put you in maximum control - and also at maximum risk.
    • The direction and insight a financial planner can offer at any income level.

    Quotes

‘Desire pulls us forward, and fuels our ambition. But unchecked desire can come at a heavy price, dragging us in to pay for it all.’

‘But while she can do everything, she can't do everything all the time.’
