New psychedelic rock releases tied to place, atmosphere, and repetition — featuring Flying Moon in Space, EarthBall, Kronstad 23, The Space Huns, You Guitarprayer, Golden Hours, Mindbloom, Arbor Labor Union, The Heavenly Bodes, Dead Drugs, PHSEII, and Sun Cult.

Digging out after a winter storm, this episode of Turn Me On, Dead Man explores psychedelic music with a clear sense of place.

Mindbloom’s Bocal Session keeps the amp tones raw and the drums punchy, aiming to capture exactly what happens at their shows, right down to naming the venue in the album title. The episode opens with Flying Moon in Space, who recorded immer für immer inside Kinett, a former cinema in Leipzig described as “alive and hungry,” a chamber big enough for six musicians to stretch out and let ideas develop in real time.

Environment shapes the sound elsewhere, too. The Heavenly Bodes write directly about Penryn and The Falmouth Hotel in Cornwall. The Space Huns shifted from a rural rehearsal space to a more industrial setting and felt the change in atmosphere. Across Leipzig, Nanaimo, Szeged, Cologne, Caen, Lake in the Hills, Gothenburg, Berlin, and Cornwall, these artists absorb their surroundings.

Repetition runs through the episode as well. PHSEII “grind two or three chords” until something clicks. EarthBall cultivate trance-like exploration, letting songs evolve from feel rather than concept. Even fully written tracks, like Mindbloom’s “Liminal Space,” draw their intensity from how the notes are played rather than how many there are.

Psychedelic music grounded in place while transcending location.

  • The Best of 2024

Turn Me On, Dead Man presents some of the highlights of psychedelic music from the past year. As the world has become more chaotic, the quality of the psychedelic music has seemed to only increase. It occurred to me that these things are related–psychedelic music seems to flourish amid the chaos, offering a vibrant counterpoint. Initially I was trying to keep the playlist to under two hours but I gave up on that pretty quickly. Instead, the playlist for this retrospective is nearly five hours long! It features some of the most unforgettable tracks from the past year, spanning a wide range of styles, focusing particularly on interesting collaborations between artists.
