Terza opera in ordine cronologico – ma che nell’accoppiamento teatrale scelto da Busoni precede Arlecchino, in realtà composto prima – Turandot, “fiaba cinese” tratta da Gozzi, offre al compositore l’occasione per sperimentare il genere del Singspiel, genere operistico tedesco con dialoghi parlati, e soprattuto evocare Il Flauto magico di Mozart, cioè l’opera più amata dal compositore e, per lui, modello assoluto di teatro musicale. La concomitanza del soggetto con l’omonima opera di Puccini aggiunge ulteriori motivi di riflessione sulla particolare natura della drammaturgia busoniana.
