Dienstag, 10. März 1925. Der Journalist Hugo Bettauer betritt seine Redaktion in der Wiener Josefstadt. Ein junger Mann, Otto Rothstock (21 Jahre), wartet dort bereits auf ihn. Rothstock zieht eine Pistole und schießt - fünf Mal.
Hugo Bettauer wird schwer verletzt, überlebt aber. Im Krankenhaus gibt er seine Aussage zu Protokoll. Am 25. März erliegt er seinen Verletzungen.
Der Prozess gegen seinen Mörder verkommt zu einer Farce. Rothstock wird am Ende freigesprochen.
