Chapter 6 Summary: “Scary Stories”

At lunch, Bella overhears gossip about her and Edward, but most talk is about the upcoming La Push trip. Curious about Edward’s camping plans, she asks her dad, who says the area is more for hunting.

On Saturday, under rare sunshine, Bella joins the student group at La Push beach. They build a fire and explore tide pools. Bella struggles to keep up and falls a few times. Later, a group of teens from the reservation joins them, including Jacob, who remembers Bella from her childhood.

Lauren asks why the Cullens weren’t invited; Sam says, “The Cullens don’t come here.” Bella walks with Jacob and asks about them. He tells her a tribal legend: his people are descended from wolves and once made a treaty with a group of “cold ones”—vampires—who don’t hunt humans. Their leader is Carlisle Cullen. Bella is shocked but pretends not to be, promising to keep the secret.

Chapter 5 Summary: “Blood Type”

At lunch, Edward invites Bella to sit with him. She’s confused by his sudden friendliness, and he cryptically says, “I might as well do it thoroughly.” He warns he’s not good for her, and they discuss how mysterious they find each other. When she jokes he was bitten by a radioactive spider, he laughs but asks, “What if I’m the bad guy?” Bella senses he’s dangerous—but not evil.

Later, during a blood-typing class, Bella faints at the sight of blood. Edward swoops in, carries her to the nurse, and arranges for her to go home early. On the drive, they connect over music and family. At her house, he jokes about her clumsiness and her upcoming La Push trip, and she slams the door, flustered.

Chapter 4 Summary: “Invitations”

Bella dreams of Edward glowing with light but walking away into darkness. He vanishes, and she continues to glimpse him in her dreams. Over the next month, tension builds. Tyler tries to make amends, while Edward ignores her—his golden eyes growing darker. Bella watches him silently.

Mike flirts openly and hints at wanting Bella to ask him to the dance. She lies about weekend plans, catching Edward’s curious gaze. Later, Edward breaks his silence to apologize, then says they shouldn’t be friends. Hurt, Bella leaves, but he suddenly helps her after she trips, then walks away.

Eric and Tyler also ask her to the dance—she declines. At home, she hears Mike accepted Jessica’s invite and urges Jessica to pair off the other guys. While cooking, Bella reflects on Edward’s words and concludes he’s letting her down gently.

The next morning, Edward surprises her by offering a ride to Seattle. When she questions his change of heart, he admits avoiding her is difficult. Though warning her again, he smiles and says, “I’ll see you in class.” (p 84)
