On 23 August 2010, police were called to his Pimlico flat after his MI6 colleague reported not hearing from him for days. Upon arrival, the police conducted a welfare check and entered the flat with the help of the landlord. While the flat appeared undisturbed, the discovery of a large red sports bag in the bathroom raised suspicion. When officers opened the bag, they found Williams' naked body inside, locked in an unusual position.
