In this first episode of The Visual Voice, host Lori King speaks with The Washington Post visual editor Kainaz Amaria and visual reporter Nick Kirkpatrick, who were deeply involved in collecting images and videos for the special report on the AR-15 assault weapon.

The podcast focuses on questions of what and how to show the carnage to everyday viewers and families of the victims who were the center of extensive ethical conversations. The visuals verify the horror that 11 communities throughout America have endured over the past 11 years. To tell this story, editors and reporters had countless hours of conversation, reflection, loss of sleep and maneuvering the legal system. The reporting, editing and creating immersive online experiences led to today’s special print section.
