After 30-some-odd movies, we have finally decided to formally rank the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We throw our personal feelings and lists aside to concoct the DEFINITIVE MCU Movie rankings for the Podcast. For this episode, we ran through the Infinity Saga so look forward to part 2 next week. From the revolutionary impact of 2008's Iron Man to the unprecedented spectacle of Endgame, we meticulously analyze what makes each Marvel entry special - or where they fall short. Is Captain America: Winter Soldier's political thriller approach superior to Guardians of the Galaxy's cosmic comedy? Does Black Panther's cultural significance elevate it above the original Avengers? We debate the iconic moments, standout performances, and narrative innovations that transformed superhero films from popcorn entertainment into legitimate cultural phenomena. Before that, we tackle some light news items surrounding the various video game film adaptations coming our way in the next year or so. • 158 - A Brotherhood vs X-Men Fantasy Draft
    Aug 21 2025

Send us a message that we can respond to at the end of every episode!

This week we talk about the Fallout Season 2 trailer, the Duffer Brothers seeking greener pastures at Paramount and Greg Fraser potentially not shooting the Batman Part 2 because of…the BEATLES? Our main focus though is the X-Men and sports. What do we mean? Journey with us as we assume the roles of Professor X, Magneto and a third more robotic party as Apocalypse and have ourselves a good old fashioned mutant draft! The draft divides mutants into three categories: physical-based powers (like Wolverine and Colossus), mental/psychic abilities (Jean Grey, Emma Frost), and elemental/energy-based powers (Storm, Iceman, Gambit). Each team must balance raw power with tactical advantages, resulting in surprisingly diverse rosters that showcase the incredible depth of Marvel's mutant catalog. This was a fun episode to record. • 157 - "Fantastic Four: First Steps" Review & Discussion!
    Aug 7 2025

Send us a message that we can respond to at the end of every episode!

After a couple of weeks off, we present our review and spoiler filled thoughts for Fantastic Four: First Steps! We venture to Earth-828, a retrofuturistic world where Marvel's First Family shines like never before. This isn't just another superhero movie. It's a cosmic family drama that captures the essence of what makes these characters special. Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards steals the show as a brilliant mind caught between genius and emotional distance. The film doesn't shy away from his darkness, showing us a man who calculates the mathematics of saving billions, even at terrible personal cost. This complexity makes him the most compelling Reed we've seen on screen. Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm emerges as the powerhouse she deserves to be, not just with her incredible abilities but as the diplomatic and emotional center keeping the family together. Joseph Quinn brings unexpected depth to Johnny Storm, creating genuine connections with the Silver Surfer that lead to one of the film's most powerful moments. Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Ben Grimm serves as the team's emotional anchor, having made peace with his transformation while still carrying its weight.

What are your thoughts on this fresh approach to Marvel's First Family? How do you think they'll factor into the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday? Share your theories and join our conversation about the ever-expanding multiverse of fandom! • 156 - Marvel's First Family: The Fantastic Four's Rocky Road to Marvel Studios
    Jul 19 2025

Send us a message that we can respond to at the end of every episode!

What happens when Hollywood repeatedly misunderstands what makes Marvel's First Family work? Fantastic Four: First Steps is upon us! With just about a week until maybe the most consequential MCU movie since Infinity War, we look back at the struggles that Marvel’s First Family has had in live action. From the (purposely) unreleased 1994 film, to the somewhat cult classics of the mid-2000’s, to the doomed Fant4stic, we examine what these movies got wrong and what we THINK First Steps will have gotten right when it’s all said and done. We explore a fascinating 30-year saga of missed opportunities, financial maneuvering, and creative missteps. From the never-released 1994 Roger Corman production to Tim Story's colorful but flawed 2000s duology to Josh Trank's disastrous 2015 reboot, the Fantastic Four's journey to the big screen reveals much about Hollywood's evolving relationship with comic book source material.

  • 155 - Superman (2025) Soars: Review and Final Thoughts
    Jul 12 2025

Send us a message that we can respond to at the end of every episode!

It’s simple: We saw James Gunn’s Superman. We are here to review one of the most momentous comic book movie releases in recent memory. Before that we talk a little Fantastic Four & discuss the Ghost of Yotei State of Play. We will note in the timecodes when we go into full spoilers for Superman in case you want to bow out before then! Thank you to everyone who continues to support and don’t forget to subscribe to download new episodes as they become available and don’t be afraid to share a rating!

Superman has landed, and with him comes the dawn of a bold new era for DC. James Gunn's vision for the Man of Steel isn't just a fresh take. It's a triumphant return to what makes Superman an enduring cultural icon: unwavering goodness in a world that desperately needs it.

David Corenswet embodies Superman with a natural charm and earnestness that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern. His ability to switch between the confident, sky-soaring hero and the thoughtful, somewhat awkward Clark Kent reveals a performer who deeply understands the dual nature at Superman's core. In this film, we see a Superman who's still figuring out his place in the world, balancing who he thinks he should be with who he wants to be.

Nicholas Hoult delivers a Lex Luthor for the ages with the ability to be genuinely menacing without veering into caricature. His ideological clash with Superman forms the beating heart of the film's conflict, offering moments that feel pulled straight from the comics while resonating with contemporary themes. The supporting cast shines just as brightly, particularly Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane and Edi Gathegi's scene-stealing Mr. Terrific, who emerges as the surprise standout of the film.

Been disappointed by previous Superman films? This one will make you believe a man can fly again. Watch it on the biggest screen possible and remember why we fell in love with superhero stories in the first place.

  • 154 - Superman: A History of Actors Who Wore the Cape
    Jul 6 2025

Send us a message that we can respond to at the end of every episode!

With Superman's triumphant return to theaters just weeks away, we dive deep into the fascinating evolution of the Man of Steel throughout his live-action history. From Kirk Alyn's pioneering portrayal in 1948 theatrical serials to the upcoming David Corenswet interpretation, we explore how each actor has shaped our cultural understanding of hope, heroism, and humanity through this iconic character.

The journey reveals surprising patterns – early Superman actors like George Reeves struggled with typecasting and limited career opportunities after donning the cape, while Christopher Reeve forever transformed the role in 1978 with his revolutionary approach of "implied power" and genuine warmth. Television brought us Tom Welling's decade-long evolution in Smallville, fundamentally changing superhero storytelling for the small screen and paving the way for today's interconnected universes.

We examine the complicated tenure of Henry Cavill, whose darker, more conflicted Superman divided audiences while never receiving the solo spotlight his portrayal deserved. Meanwhile, Tyler Hoechlin's family-oriented interpretation on "Superman & Lois" demonstrated how the character could evolve while maintaining his essential optimism. As David Corenswet prepares to embody what James Gunn calls a "radical" portrayal focused on simple goodness, we reflect on what makes Superman endure across generations.

The episode also covers breaking entertainment news, including Denis Villeneuve's surprising selection to direct the next James Bond film, the eyebrow-raising casting choices for the Street Fighter movie adaptation, and the exciting announcement that Jon Bernthal's Punisher will appear in Spider-Man 4.

Topic for Next Week: The On Screen History of Superman

As James Gunn's Superman enters its final promotional push, we're witnessing a renaissance for the Man of Steel – a colorful, optimistic vision that honors Christopher Reeve's legacy while embracing modern filmmaking techniques. With David Corenswet embodying Superman's essence so naturally, this film is positioned to dominate the summer box office and potentially reach the billion-dollar milestone.

Meanwhile, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning proves Tom Cruise remains Hollywood's most committed action star. Despite the film's staggering $400 million budget, nothing compares to watching Cruise literally hang from a biplane or navigate a sinking submarine – practical stunts that demonstrate his unparalleled dedication to entertaining audiences.

The Last of Us Season 2 concludes with mixed results – visually stunning and brilliantly acted, particularly by Isabella Merced as Dina and Pedro Pascal in emotional flashbacks, but hampered by a reluctance to fully embrace Ellie's dark descent. By softening her moral deterioration compared to the game, the show creates an interesting dilemma where Kaitlyn Dever's brief but powerful appearance as Abby may position her as the more compelling protagonist heading into Season 3.

  • 152 - Thunderbolts* Review: A Broken Team Faces Their Inner Demons
    May 9 2025

Send us a message that we can respond to at the end of every episode!

In a superhero landscape often dominated by world-ending threats and cosmic battles, Thunderbolts* emerges as something refreshingly different – a deeply human story about damaged individuals finding strength in their shared vulnerability. Jake Schreier's film assembles an unlikely team of super-soldiers, assassins, and outcasts, each carrying their own psychological wounds. Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, haunted by abandonment and isolation, forms the emotional anchor of this narrative. What makes Thunderbolts* exceptional is how it transforms a comic book concept into a powerful metaphor for mental health struggles. Lewis Pullman delivers a breakout performance as Bob Reynolds, whose battle with "The Void" – literally his inner darkness manifested – offers one of the most poignant examinations of depression and self-doubt ever depicted in a superhero film. When the team ultimately rallies to help Bob confront his demons, the message resonates far beyond the fantastical setting: we're stronger together than alone.

By the time these broken individuals transform into something resembling a team, you'll find yourself invested not just in their next mission, but in their collective healing. Before everything Thunderbolts*, we take time to recap Episodes 3 and 4 of The Last of Us Season 2!
