About this listen

In this episode of The His and Hers Gen X Podcast, Chad and Cristina revisit the 1982 animated fantasy film The Last Unicorn by Rankin & Bass. Cristina adored this movie as a child and still finds plenty to love in its dreamy atmosphere; while Chad thought it was another boring girl's movie.

Unlike Cristina's two previous picks for "disturbing children's movies of the 80s", Chad didn't think this one was actually dark ENOUGH. It was more emo than anything as the main character - Amalthea the Unicorn - comes across as sad and whiney. Both found the pacing rather slow and "The Red Bull" villain rather arbitrary.

Still, they did enjoy the characters and appreciated the moments of levity throughout the film. The ending is nice, but they both feel as if so much more could have been done.

Fun fact: the music was composed by 1970s folk-rock band America (best known for "A Horse With No Name" appropriately enough), which adds a unique touch not found in any other animated films of the era.
