“Dr. Carrie Esopenko is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion Center at the University of Utah, as well as in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Her research focuses on understanding the effects of neurotrauma and mental health conditions across populations, identifying methods for improving brain injury prevention, and developing patient-specific and community-based intervention strategies for trauma-exposed populations. She leads the ENIGMA Intimate Partner Violence Working Group, and co-leads ENIGMA Global Knowledge Exchange Network. Dr. Esopenko’s work has been supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Department of Defense, National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research. “Kim Frey, PhD, CCC-SLP, CBIS, is the Director of Speech-Language Pathology and joined Craig in 2013. She received her B.S. in Communication from the University of Tulsa in 1993, her M.S. in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1995, and a dual PhD in Cognitive Science and Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2013. For 14 years, she worked in inpatient neurologic rehabilitation and also researched cognitive impairment due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, and viral illness. Subsequently, she became an Instructor in the Neurobehavioral Disorders Program in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. In this program, she served as Director of the Constraint Induced Aphasia Therapy clinic and was also the study coordinator for a double-blind, placebo controlled pharmacologic and cognitive rehabilitation trial for persons with traumatic brain injury. She founded the CHAT Program at Craig in 2017. She has presented nationally and internationally and published on several topics including neurobehavioral disorders, aphasia, and assessment and treatment of cognitive disorders following stroke and traumatic brain injury.” (https://craighospital.org/directory/kim-frey)

Your right to vote is your power! Especially when it comes to demographics, such as our friends who live with different abilities, that are under-represented at these crucial voting booths!

In this show series, we empower and educate our friends with different abilities and their loved ones on all they need to know about voting, accessibility in voting, why voting is important, what the different offices up for election are in Oklahoma and why they are important- as well as information about all the candidates up for these different offices (and help you learn/know how to do your own research), and so much more! Every episode is produced inclusively with differently abled self-advocates with a differently abled self-advocates’ voice and perspective participating in the conversation as well!

In this first episode, Lisa, Maggie, and Jacob chat about why voting is important- especially empowering and engaging voters who live with disabilities- and how all our voices and votes matter!

Manley, MD, PhD is the Chief of Neurosurgery at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he co-directs the UCSF Brain and Spinal Injury Center and is Professor and Vice Chairman of Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Manley is an internationally recognized expert in neurotrauma. He leads national and international clinical research efforts in the study of the short- and long-term effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Building on the success of the seminal, national longitudinal study, TRACK-TBI, Geoff, as Contact Principal Investigator, along with a nationwide team of TBI experts, has recently launched the TRACK-TBI NETWORK, an innovative, precision-medicine driven consortium that will test Phase 2 drugs for TBI. Peter Leidy is a Wisconsin-based motivational speaker, consultant, and singer-songwriter who specializes in the disability rights and human services fields. He is nationally known for his interactive presentations that advocate for the inclusion of people with disabilities, healthy relationships, and rethinking the way society views “challenging” behaviors.

Peter speaks (and sings) at conferences and provides workshops throughout the United States and Canada, and also consults with families, organizations, and state counties on personalized supports, self-determination, and employee retention. He is also famously known for writing personalized songs for special events and occasions from experiences in “human serviceland.”

“Roger Zemek, MD, is a Pediatric Emergency Physician practicing at the Children’s Hospital of Ontario (CHEO) and a Senior Scientist in the CHEO Research Institute in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He is a Full Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine and holds a Tier-1 Clinical Research Chair in Pediatric Concussion at the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Zemek’s national research program on pediatric concussion includes leading the largest pediatric concussion study to-date examining the predictors for Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms in children (5P study). He also has led studies to optimize return to physical activity (PedCARE), return to school, and screentime. He leads the international Living Guideline for Pediatric Concussion that provides up-to-date best available evidence recommendations for health care professionals providing care for pediatric patients with a suspected concussion and information for patients, families, teachers and coaches. “Juliet Haarbauer-Krupa, PhD, was a Senior Health Scientist on the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Team in the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention (DUIP) at the Injury Center. As a behavioral scientist, her role on the TBI team was to devise research projects and products to better understand trends in TBI in the US and to improve health outcomes for individuals living with a TBI. She was project lead on the Report to Congress on the Management of Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and the Return to School Projects in the division. Recent publications report on life expectancy and unemployment outcomes for moderate to severe TBI, stroke and TBI, PTSD in adults with mild TBI, point of healthcare entry for children with concussions, talking to young children about concussions, improving clinical practice for concussion diagnosis, and service delivery systems for children with TBI. Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa has 30 years of experience and has authored over 20 publications and presentations in the area of traumatic brain injury with specialties in rehabilitation and pediatric populations. She currently holds an adjunct position in the Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine.”
