    March 19, 2026: Michigan State advanced easily to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a win over Summit League champion, North Dakota State 92-67. MSU got out to a quick double digit lead in the first half and extended it to 20 at the half, 47-27.

    The second half was pretty much the same as the first with the Spartans pushing out to as high as 28 points behind 65% shooting in the lane and 50% from deep. Defensively, MSU held the Bison to 24% from 3 - 11% below their average on the season.

    Individually, it was a very solid game from most of the Spartans but an especially good game from Carson Cooper who finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and shot over 75% from the field. He’s the first Spartan to accomplish that in an NCAA tournament game for MSU since Magic Johnson in 1979.

    March 17, 2026: Michigan State opens their matchup against the North Dakota State Bison looking to impose their physical style early. Michigan State will want to control the pace with strong half-court defense, disciplined rebounding, and efficient offense in transition. When the Spartans are at their best, they force tough shots, dominate the glass, and turn defensive stops into quick scoring opportunities. Against a mid-major opponent like North Dakota State, establishing that physical edge in the first ten minutes will be key to preventing the Bison from settling into the game. North Dakota State comes in as a dangerous opponent that can stretch the floor and score in bunches if given space. The Bison traditionally rely on disciplined offense, good ball movement, and perimeter shooting to keep games close against higher-profile programs. If Michigan State allows open looks from three or gets careless with the basketball, North Dakota State has the offensive structure to take advantage and hang around deep into the game.     March 15, 2026: We’ve finally reached the first climax of the season and a time when a lot of fans start paying attention to college basketball - the bracket reveal. By all reasonable measures, Michigan State has had a very good season. They finished the year 25-7 on the year and secured a 3 seed. By any objective measure, a very solid year - maybe not great - but very, very good. Of course, a lot of the saltiness expressed by the MSU fanbase is probably due to the historically great season that Michigan has had.

    Under Tom Izzo MSU has now made a record straight 28 NCAA Tournament appearances which I think means one thing in particular - we’ve seen just about everything from the Spartans in this bizarre and random tournament. We’ve seen every seed from 1-11 except, strangely, an 8 seed. We’ve seen first round exits, a national title, multiple elite 8s, sweet 16s, and final fours - those coming from likely and unlikely seed lines. Frankly, when you’ve had this many appearances you’re bound to have seen just about anything by this point.

    So this year, MSU finds itself as the 3 seed in the East region and will face off against North Dakota State in the first round. Second round matchups would be either Louisville or USF and then the sweet 16 probably UConn. Maybe Duke after that for a trip to the Final Four.
