  • Put a Bit of GEPEP Into Your Breeding Program
    Dec 12 2021

Myth busted - you can have a fat sheep which also cuts a lot of wool. How do we know this? Well, from the Genetic Evaluation: Productivity, Efficiency and Profitability (GEPEP) project of course! GEPEP is an add on trial to the Merino Lifetime Productivity project and evaluates the per hectare profitability of different sires based on feed conversion and fat depth.

To explain more, The Sheep's Back spoke to GEPEP researchers Dr Andrew Thompson and Sarah Blumer. You can see previous GEPEP presentations on The Sheep's Back website.

  • How Good is Your Lifetime Performance?
    Nov 7 2021

In 2015, Australian Wool Innovation and the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association teamed up to create the Merino Lifetime Productivity (MLP) project. Spanning 10 years and five sites across Australia, this is the largest sheep experiment in the country. It is designed to capture the lifetime performance of Merino ewes to help better understand how current selection methods best predict lifetime productivity.

In this episode of The Drafting Gate, Dr Bronwyn Clarke, site manager of MLP Pingelly in Western Australia, discusses some of the unique findings to come from MLP. You can read the Pingelly MLP drop results here and see Bronwyn's previous presentations on The Sheep's Back website.
