Summary

 In which the heavy heart of a young man leads him to seek counsel from a learned but somewhat pedantic doctor, after confiding a delicate and distressing matter to his mother and beloved; and in the course of their earnest deliberations, revelations of local decrees and the weight of authority come to light with a mixture of gravity and unwitting humour. Amidst tearful appeals and prudent advice, the simple villagers confront the intricate web of law and custom that governs their lives, hoping to find a way through their trials.
