About this listen

Apple CEO Tim Cook played trombone in his high school’s marching band.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice learned piano from her grandmother.

Both are part of a global community of leaders who grew up with intensive musical training.

On the After Arts Podcast, we speak intimately with trailblazers in law, medicine, and finance to uncover how music empowers them to excel.

Jess Ting first learned how to play bass in a junior-high classroom in New York City. He soon knew he’d discovered something special.

Jess would hang around for hours after school to spend extra time with his instrument. He bought a cheap plywood bass second-hand so he could play at home. He found sheet music at the library. He practiced intensely, enraptured by the magic at his fingertips.

Jess’ passion– and the talent that underpinned it– lifted him from his parents’ modest Queens apartment to the dazzling heights of Carnegie Hall and The Juilliard School.

That’s before one difficult decision forced him to walk away from music altogether.
