De hecho las denominadas propiedades o notas de la Iglesia (una, santa, católica y apostólica) tienen, junto a su dimensión esencial o constitutiva, una dimensión existencial, dinámica o histórica. Por eso se han considerado como signos de credibilidad, desde que fueron formuladas en el Credo niceno-constantinopolitano (a. 381), por parte de la apologética y la Teología fundamental, para mostrar la «vera Ecclesia» sobre todo frente a los protestantes y otros cristianos desunidos que hoy llamamos hermanos separados.
