Il nome viene da quello di una famiglia altolocata che viveva in zona, ma il colore delle due case quattrocentesche che delimitano la piazza di fronte a San Giovanni dei Fiorentini un po' suggerisce lo zolfo e la terra molle che erano le caratteristiche di questa zona all'epoca di Roma antica, anzi antichissima.
I Romani qui, infatti, pensavano che si trovassero le porte degli Inferi.
