For many years, he was a Professor of Ethnochoreology and Ethnomusicology at University of Malaya where he earned his B.A. Honors. He earned his M.A. (Dance Ethnology) from the University of Hawaii and PhD (Southeast Asia Studies and Musicology) from the University of Michigan. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor at Sunway University.
