The first Talanoa Ako 10-week radio programme commenced in April 2020 as a response to COVID-19. The Ministry partnered with Pacific Media Network to produce a show on the networks 531PI radio programme engaging over 15,000 listeners per week. Talanoa Ako On Air ensured Pacific parents still received education information to support their children’s learning.

  • PMN Cooks | Talanoa Ako – Back to School Series 2026 (Te Reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani)
    Feb 1 2026

We’re kicking off Week 1 of Talanoa Ako with two educators who know our rangatahi well, Teokotai Tarai from Tokoroa High School and Josephine Ivirangi from Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate.

This first talanoa is all about getting back into the school rhythm. Whether your child is starting school, moving up to a new year level, or beginning at a new school, those early weeks can be a significant adjustment.

We talk practical things parents can do at home — setting simple routines, taking time to listen, and keeping expectations realistic — so our kids feel supported, settled, and ready for the year ahead.
