About this listen
An eyewitness account of the great Oklahoma Land Rush of 1893 during which millions of acres of land was offered to homesteaders who could reach it and file on it first.. This is followed by a newspaper account of the same. There were 300,000 people trying for 22,000 possible parcels of land and it was a wild melee. the worst part of it was the cheaters- those who snuck onto the land ahead of time- their excuse being that others had done the same to them during the past land rush. Two famous terms arose from this land rush- "Boomers"- those who waited for the cannon to boom before starting out- and "Sooners"- those who cheated and went early.
