 Hay virtudes intelectuales, que se refieren al bien del conocimiento; y virtudes morales, que se refieren al bien moral de la voluntad. Las virtudes morales potencian en la persona la libertad práctica o moral, al contrario que los vicios morales. Las virtudes se adquieren y desarrollan por repetición de actos, pero es necesaria la propia interiorización. La definición aristotélica de la virtud como término medio ha de entenderse bien: pues no es para toda clase de acciones y puede comprenderse mal si no se analiza bien.
