Iniciamos ahora el estudio de las virtudes morales, que perfeccionan a la voluntad y que nacen de la inclinación natural a amar el bien y, más concretamente, a uno mismo, a los demás y a Dios. Esta tendencia ha sido puesta por Dios en el corazón del hombre para que le busque y le encuentre como Bien Sumo, y responda libremente a su amor. Las virtudes morales perfeccionan a la persona para amar. Pero el bien más inmediato es uno mismo, y por tanto, el amor más básico y primordial es el amor de sí, que es contrario al egoísmo. Ese amor es la condición de todas las virtudes morales.
