 El Nuevo Testamento es unánime en presentar la figura de Pedro ocupando un lugar preeminente en Jerusalén, Antioquía y Roma. Los evangelios señalan su papel de cabeza en la misión de la Iglesia en Jn 21,16 («pastorea mis ovejas») y Le 22,32 («confirma a tus hermanos»), la roca sobre la que Jesús funda su Iglesia y a quien le corresponde estar al frente de ella (M t 16,18). La tradición fija la fecha de su muerte entre los años 64 y 66 durante la persecución de Nerón.
