About this listen

The cathedral was designed in the Gothic style of 13th century European cathedrals by Sir William Emerson who is known for such masterpieces as the Crawford Market in Mumbai and the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. Keeping up with the warm climate for much of the year in Allahabad, the cathedral has porches for carriages, low windows that could be easily covered with mats to protect interiors from hot winds and dust, and vaulted hallways. The exterior is built in creamish white stone with fine red sandstone dressings, and the roof is covered with red tiles. With a line of palms around it, this cathedral presents a façade with fine stucco work, Gothic arches, a tower, flying buttresses and snarling gargoyles. Inside, you can see vaulted ceilings, classical columns, archways, beautiful stained glass windows and an impressive altar with mosaic and marble inlay. The pulpit is exceedingly fine piece of workmanship in alabaster with three panels. While European architecture dominates the church building, there is some fine marble latticework inspired by the Mughal buildings of Agra.
